“Rino Viani” International Clarinet Competition 2008

On the 13rd and 14th of December 2008 R. Viani” International Clarinet Competition took place in Carpi (Modena) Italy .Rino Viani was a former clarinet teacher of the Carpi Music Academy for many years. The participants of the two categories A and B came from many Italian cities , from Poland,Germany,Czech Republic,Japan,Israel . The members of the jury were: Corrado Giuffredi, Massimo Ferraguti, Luigi Magistrelli, Anna Maria Giaquinta,Ivan Bacchi and Larry Combs, president, former principal clarinet of Chicago Symphony orchestra.

Four players ( Antonio Piemonte, Francesca Latella,Petr Vasek e Udih Naveh) have been selected trough three rounds.

The required pieces were the Mozart Concerto for the first round, Debussy Rhapsody and Stravinsky 3 pieces for the second round.

They performed the final round in a public concert the Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations with the string orchestra of "Tonelli" Carpi Music Academy. The winners were:

1° Antonio Piemonti(Italy) 2000 euro
2° Francesca Latella (Italy) 1000 euro
3° Petr Vasek (Czech Republic) 750 Euro

Cat. B Clarinet Ensemble:
Only one prize to Breath Quartet(Boschiroli,E.Patrini,R.Patrini, Vallone). 1000 Euro
Special Mention to O. Vecchi Quartet Bergamoni,Linoci,Ponzi,Risorto).

Clarinet Camp in Costa Rica

The first Clarinet Camp will take in Costa Rica, from 26 till 30 January. This musical activity will take place at the Escuela de Artes Musicales (Desamparados) and clarinetist Krista Helfenberger is the special guest - she will be given master clases to all the young participants.

Clarinetist Anthony McGill plays for Obama

As simple as that: for the Barack Obama's presidential inauguration, young clarinetist Anthony McGill will be performing, together with violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Gabriela Montero.

As they mentioned in this note: "The four musicians will be playing a work composed by arranger John Williams just before Obama takes the Oath of Office from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts".

Paquito plays Goodman

The great clarinetist and saxophinist Paquito D' Rivera will perform today a tribute to Benny Goodman, in a concert called "Saluting the King of Swing".

Paquito will be a guest with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble: Join Jon Faddis and The Chicago Jazz Ensemble in welcoming Grammy® award-winning woodwind virtuoso Paquito D'Rivera for a great night of music. Tonight's concert features music commemorating the 70th anniversary of the ground-breaking Carnegie Hall concert by Benny Goodman (who originally hailed from Chicago), as well as Paquito's own unique big band arrangements.

EUROPEAN FESTIVAL for CLARINET ENSEMBLES

Het project ‘clarinets@the-conservatory’ van 1 april 2007 werd zo’n succes dat we vele vragen kregen voor een tweede editie. We zijn dan ook zeer verheugd dat we u kunnen melden dat we voor deze sessie ook het tweejaarlijks ‘EUROPEAN FESTIVAL for CLARINET ENSEMBLES’ naar Gent hebben gebracht.

Dit betekent dat we veel meer mogelijkheden hadden om dit gebeuren in te kleden. We organiseren dit jaar niet één maar twee dagen en hebben een internationale schare aan groepen en solisten bereid gevonden om in Gent te musiceren.

We wilden echter niet afwijken van de succesformule van vorig jaar. Basis blijven de clarinetchoirs (voor wie we eigenlijk de eerste editie hebben georganiseerd). Het feit dat we naast Belgische ook Nederlandse en zelfs een Frans choir kunnen voorstellen bewijst dat ons initiatief zeer gesmaakt wordt.

Daarnaast hebben we ook de formule van masterclasses en introductielessen behouden. De docenten behoren tot de absolute Europese en wereld top. Er kan geopteerd worden voor klarinet, basklarinet, klezmer, jazz en klarinetkwartet. Verschillende disciplines zijn nog onderverdeeld in niveaus Je kunt tevens kiezen om hier actief of passief (als toehoorder) aan deel te nemen.

Als klap op de vuurpijl hebben we de beste Europese klarinetkwartetten (en zelfs enkele Amerikaanse) kunnen contracteren. Alleen deze groepen zijn voldoende om jullie te overhalen om naar het Gentse conservatorium af te zakken ! We zijn ervan overtuigd dat ze u zullen overdonderen ! Virtuositeit, techniek en muzikaliteit zullen afgewisseld worden met creativiteit.

Het Ciurlionis String Quartet (Litouwen) zorgt voor de afwisseling. Dit internationaal geprezen strijkkwartet speelt o.a. met Eddy Vanoosthuyse en Marc Kerckhof. Op zaterdag avond hebben we een ‘jazz-café’ in de inkomhall met enkele internationale jazz virtuozen, begeleid door een combo.

Er is terug een wedstrijd voor clarinetchoirs ; er is een prijs voor de beste uitvoering (internationale jury) en er is ook een ‘Publieksprijs’. Voor beide wedstrijden wordt een klarinet Buffet Crampon als eerste prijs aangeboden.
In de inkomhall is er doorlopend de mogelijkheid om instrumenten uit te proberen. De grote merken zullen aanwezig zijn met hun materiaal en er zal ook een stand met bladmuziek zijn
Belangrijk is dat dit hele gebeuren (concerten, lessen, clinics, …) GRATIS toegankelijk zijn !
Voor het traditionele natje en droogje kun je terecht in de bar die spijs en drank aan zeer democratische prijzen zal aanbieden.

Mercadante Competition

Just a couple of weeks ago I was the member of the International "Clarinet Mercadante Competition", which took place in Noci , near Bari ,south part of Italy.The other members were Ludmila Peterkova, Romeo Tudorache and Alois Brandhofer (president)

The level of the competition was quite high, with participants coming from Italy, USA, Japan, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Israel

International Crusell Clarinet Competition

Rony Moser: On a musical journey to hit new shores

THE musical heritage of Vienna comes to the Arabian Gulf, at least that’s how it will be when Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra principal clarinettist Austrian Rony Moser takes to the stage later this month.
At 27 years Moser has made a big move, relocating to Doha from Austria to take up the position with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, a new initiative by Qatar Foundation.

“This is the first time I have left my home to go and live in a totally different country, and really experience a new place and new culture,” he said.
Moser has travelled to Mexico and Japan with famous European orchestras and his highly successful wind quintet Penta Musica but he was drawn to Qatar by the notion of something new.
Observing that Vienna is one of the most important and historical places in the world for classical music, Moser stated he was so impressed by the idea that in Qatar the authorities wanted to invest in their culture for benefit of their own people.
“I thought we may be the only new thing in Doha, but we came out of the airport and realised that everything is new,” he quipped.
Moser will be performing with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra at its inaugural concert on October 30 in Doha.
As a former Music Ambassador for Austria, Moser is now brimming with pride at the prospect of playing with the 100 other musicians in the orchestra who have come from all over the world.
“I think we are here as ambassadors, not only for music, but for Qatar. We intend to tour to America, to Europe, and maybe even Japan. When I’ve toured in the past, we’ve inspired our audiences to visit Austria. Now we are the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and should inspire people to come here. I also want people here to feel that this is ‘their’ orchestra.”
Moser’s entry into music took longer than what could be considered ‘normal’ for a professional musician.
As a child he had always been keen to learn how to play the accordion, having been surrounded by traditional music at home and at all the local weddings and parties. It was, however, on his mother’s recommendation that he took up clarinet lessons with a flutist in his home town, who taught him the basics.
Whereas many great musicians begin to play their instruments as early as age three or four, Moser only started proper music lessons when he was 15.
He then surprised himself by succeeding with his musical career. “I went to a normal, commercial school and intended to go into law, or work for a bank or an insurance company but when I managed to do well at some music competitions at 17, it was then that I realised I could make something of this.”
Until this point, knowing that he had kept his options open gave him confidence, “Nobody knows whether they will succeed at earning a living from music, for me it was important to have a background which gave me options.”
Moser has moved to Doha with his wife, a pianist, whom he met in Salzburg. In his spare time, between the schedule of daily rehearsals for their concerts and tours, Moser is keen to perform in smaller groups at local venues, and both of them hope for the chance to teach music too.
In the desert heat of Qatar, Moser sees a great opportunity for young people to begin learning an instrument. “In Austria you can spend your free time outside as a child, but here with the heat, children are spending a lot of their day in the house. It’s not so easy here to just go outside and play football.”

Cómo tocar el clarinete....por Nintendo

Hace unos pocos días subimos una nota en el Blog de Clariperu sobre esta novedad que nos trae Nintendo: en su serie de Wii Music, Nintendo ha introducido al clarinete....

La idea parece bastante buena, pero evidentemente tiene sus contras. Si apreciamos el video de abajo, veremos que el juguete en sí no se asemeja en nada a un clarinete - no hay contacto bucal con el instrumento, y carece de llaves. El mismo artefacto puede ser usado para "tocar" la flauta, el contrafagot, el saxo barítono o el oboe. Lo único que cambiaría sería el sonido.

Y este útimo es también un tema delicado. Con la tecnología de hoy en día, los sonidos creados por medios electrónicos han mejorado mucho - incluso aquellos reproducidos por teclados comerciales. Nintendo parece no tener conocimiento al respecto. El sonido del supuesto clarinete parece haber salido de un MIDI o un teclado electrónico de los años noventa. Simplemente, el sonido es horroroso.

Pero, si consideramos que este juego pueda de alguna manera activar la curiosidad de niños a acercarse a un clarinete real, entonces Nintendo podría crear posibles adeptos al clarinete en el futuro. Habrá que tener paciencia y ver la demanda y resultados de este juego - por nuestra parte,Guitar Heroe nos parece más cool...

Welcome to Clariperu International. This new space is kind of a mirrow of Clariperu's original blog (in Spanish) but with some new features...

First of all, Clariperu is a Spanish speaking organization - we have our website, where you can find several articles, original interviews, our selections of videos, etc. Our blog has lots of news from all the world, thanks to our collaborators Valentina Palma (Venezuela), Iván Martínez (Mexico), Daniel Blech (Argentina) Dieter (Spain) and Marco Mazzini (Peru).

What we will try to do here is to create a trully international space, with publications not only in English but also in other languages. Using some tools from the internet, each post can be easily translated into English - or another language!
